Labour at Prayer

A public service announcement brought to you by the Letter to the Colossians.

1:3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you…

1:9-14 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us form the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

2:6-7 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.

4:2 Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.

4:3-4 And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for your message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I an in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should.

4:12b He is always wrestling in prayer for you, that you may stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured.

There you have it – a Colossian reminder to pray continually. Because praying is the great work of God at work. Because a simple childlike prayer is all that is needed. Because prayer is the battle. Because it is not just about the thrill of seeing prayer answered. Because it is simply following what Christ commanded.
